Gangotri is one of the most important place in Hinduism, and the second stage of the pilgrimage. Baghirathi river rises from the glacier about 20km from the village. thousands of people arrive here everyday on dangerous roads in the narrow valley to pray and perform puya in the holy temple, housing the statue of goddess Ganga from end of May until Divali festival, and will be returned in its winter settlement of Murkhba, downstream. Carried in a procession of pilgrims up and down.
The trek to the source of Baghirathi, to Gaumukh, requires a permit which can be obtained at Uttarkashi only.
there are plenty of hotels and guesthouses in the village, restaurants and souvenir shops. Parking is limited - sometimes vehilcles queue up for 10 km or even more. [edit text]  [editors]
