A visit to Prague

  18 votes
This was great 7 days in the capital of Czech Republic. And seven days is for sure not too much. In Prague you never get bored. Too many sights to see.

Tram 22 has the most picturesque route

It's a wonderful, picturesque city. There are some must-haves and it's really worth visiting them (details in Favourite sports section). The city offers a variety of accommodation. I chose a students dorm (ca. $20 per single room). The transportation system in the city is quite well developed with trams, busses and metro. It's a good option to buy a weekly ticket for all three means (CZK 280). Take a stroll at night and enjoy the beauty of illuminated Prague and absolutely take a camera and make a few shots (tripod may come in handy).

Favourite spots:
Charles Bridge
Charles Bridge
1. Hradčany - the Prague Castle

2. Josefov - the Jewish district (see the Staronova synagogue)

3. Kavárna Slavia - a cafe with an atmosphere all its own, try hot chocolate with absith

4. Zlatá ulička (the Golden Lane) - another place where you feel like in a fairy tale, visit it at dusk

5. Charles Bridge in the morning

What's really great:
Zlatá ulička at dusk

Zlatá ulička at dusk is something I'll never forget. Small houses like in a fairy tale, with sunflowers growing in front of some of them. You'll enjoy the mass of colors.

Sights:
Library in the Strahov monastery

See the Charles Bridge; go there early in the morning. Later there are uncounted swarms of people and you can hardly go across the bridge.

Climb Petřín Hill and enjoy the vistas of Prague. In summer you can try cherries that grow on the hillsides. There is also a cableway on the top, but it didn't work when I was in Prague. After going on the top go downward heading for Strahov monastery and see their library, it's really impressive with colorfully painted ceiling and gilts. They also boast of having more than thousand-year-old evangeliary.

Accommodations:
Try to find some cheap spot in a students dorm (it works only during the summer holidays).

Restaurants:
Try knedlíčky (kind of dumplings) with duck and red cabbage. Really tasty. Such course in the Old Town Square costs ca. CZK 400 ($20).

Other recommendations:
The House of Black Madonna
The House of Black Madonna
Prague is probably the only place in the world where cubism was implemented in utilitarian architechture. Take a stroll in Vyšehrad district and try to find some examples. The House of Black Madonna is another cubist building but in the Old Town.
