There's more then the city!

  4 votes

A lot of either love Sydney, or they love Melbourne. Personally, I'm a Sydney lover. The weather is warm, but no overly so and the architecture makes for beautiful contrasts. I stayed in the Sydney Hills which add another dimension to the city... very rural. Overall, it's a lovely city no matter where you are, but I hope everybody tries to experience more then what is offered to the typical backpacker.

Favourite spots:
Darling Harbour is beautiful, and the fish markets are birilliant for lunch. If you've done the opera house, another must is the Olympic Stadium, at Home Bush. It's probably the only chance you'll get to stand on the medal podium.

What's really great:
Compared to the rest of Australia, Sydney deosn't have a distinctive character, it't too big to have that. All of the suburbs have a distinctive flavour, from truely Aussie to cosmopolitan. My favourite evening was spent having dinner in a park, overlooking the harbour in Balmain.

Sights:
I really hate tours, but the tour of the Opera house was breathtaking. We saw the orchestra in action, and if you're lucky you might see actors or dancers in rehersal. Homebush is another must, its a bit of a hike from the city, but well worth it.

There is a lot of hype about Bondi beach. Got to say, coming from NZ, there was nothing fantastic about it. It's more of an experience catching the ferry to Manly, but do the vackpacker routine if you moust;)

Restaurants:
The main road into Balmain has a vast array of take aways. Fantastic noodle bar called Wok on in. Sounds Tacky but the food is brilliant and not too pricey.
