I am now in Nigeria and using Malarone. You take it for less time than Doxy but it is more expensive.

Using a decent spary too to keep the mossies away. I only got a few bites and that was my own fault for wandering outside for only a few minutes one evening without spraying!!!!!

Live and learn!

Enjoy it while you can!

malaria control is most of the times easier to control than people think. you will probably be at more risk of water and food discomfort than you will of malaria. Safest method, Use a mosquito net and insect repellent lotion.

If you are coming to Kenya and eastern africa, an important point to note is that sulphurbased anti malarials are being phased out, try something else. best solution however, especially if on a long visit is to get that kind of medicationa locally, or consult your doc for best regiment.

I've just noticed that my Doctor prescribed Lariam. Now I don't know what to do; do I take it and just see if I get any side effects or should I just get another prescrpiton.

The side effects seem quite extreme, maybe it's not even worth taking the risk?

I have taken both Larium and Melarone. I didn't experience side effects from either. Larium is easy - once a week. Malarone is daily. I saw a travel Doc two weeks ago and he refused to give my daughter larium for fear of complication with other medication she takes, so we both opted for Melarone.

I can't say that the side affects are over stated, but neither I or my frequent travel partner, Mary, have had an adverse reaction.

read extensively on malaria, there are plenty of resoures on the net. more often than not, chances are that what will not have side effects on you at home wont have side effects in africa, so, why not try it from home, secondly, tropical diseases tend to be seasonal, depending on the season, it may be malaria, or just common cold. you really neednt worry if youll be visiting the urban areas cause most have a large assortment of chemists and professionals.

here's a link to the kenya medical research institute.

and here's something more comprehensive about malaria.

hope you enjoy your journey.

Collins/Eire,

Thank you very much for the informtion provided, I've read some of the articles, but my fears are still there.

I also take comfort in the fact that someone I know has taken the drug without side effects. I think ordinarily, I wouldn't take this medication, but I feel I'm forced to, somewhat.

Anyway finger crossed I have no effects. I will give it ago; at least I will have time before I travel to change perscription if necessary.

Thanks

Amanda

I hate to heighten your fears but when I travelled to Sth America in 2002 I took Doxy and ended up with sunburnt nailbeds!!! What's that you ask???

Well it is very rare and basically all my fingers felt like they had been slammed in a door, then the nail beds went brown and died off so all my nails lifted off. There was nothing I could do but wait for them to grow back - many months later.

Last year when I went to Cambodia & Laos I took Malarone - cost $500 dollars as opposed to $30 for Doxy but no side affects.

And there is no way I would have taken the risk with Doxy again.

Cheers,

Kerrie

Yes you need them in all the places you are going. Take a mosquito net and some spray with repellent in it.

The pills use to be hard to take but the new ones are a lot better now.

Have a safe and fun trip.
