Hey!

I really want to get the basic PADI or a comparable diving certificate. At the moment I'm living in Holland and the sea-diving here isn't that interesting. Furthermore it is also expencive to get such a lisence here.

I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas of a place where I can get my PADI (or comparable) during a vacation. Any other advice on getting my 'diver's lisence' is also appreciated.

Thanx!

FIRST OF ALL!, do, do, do, get PADI and only PADI. The reason I say this is two fold...1) PADI has never had a successful lawsuit filed against them. In other words, they have the best instructors and if something happens to a diver, it has never been shown to be a result of the training...It is by far the safest and most professional organization out there. 2) It is the most recognizable throughout the world. I have dove in many parts of the northern hemisphere and you find PADI everywhere (so if you want to take higher classes along the way or get special certification's here and there, then it is much easier to go with PADI.

The best place to learn to dive and the one of the best places in the world is on the Red Sea. In particular, Sharm el-Sheikh. It is on the Sinai and the water is so warm, clear, exciting that you will not want to leave. Sharm is a more expensive to stay but the diving is about the same elsewhere. Dahab is great too but not to learn to dive. It is much more laid back and not a place to take a family.

One more thing great about diving in this area is there is much to do when you are not diving...hiking, sight seeing, trex, etc. Go to www.state.gov (US State Dept web site) and click on travel warnings just to make sure it is safe. The Sinai is the safest place in Egypt to be because it is impossible, virtually, to get there if you are an Arab without being stopped and checked many times over. I have never had a problem there. Good luck! Anything else, just drop me a line at brad_imm@yahoo.com

Thanx. I'll go for PADI and only PADI, then :) I was in Egypt (El Gouna, straight across the Red Sea from Sharm) this summer, and this is where I got the need to learn to dive. I think I might go back and get the certificate there.

It seems like everyone who has the Pcertificate are really happy that they have it. That's motivational :D

Advantage of having done the dive certification in Holland is:

1) you will have Dutch instructors, instructing in Dutch. I know you have a good grasp of English...

2) meet your dutch peers

3) have the best certification you ever had: PADI in a Nordic Euro country. If you are able to dive with 1 meter of visibility they recon you are experienced and good... I have heard this over and over again from different people in Australia, Turkey,..

4) Learn to dive better. 12 degrees Celcius in a wetsuit, with limited visibility is cool and good for your experience. If you are able to cope with that, warm water diving is easy.

5) Sweetwaterdiving in Holland is not that bad... I've seen Pikes, Eels and lots more wildlife.

6) AND IMPORTANT: you'll have dutch medical fittness for diving approved by good docters. When you are going for diving on charters, you will altways need to fill in a form telling them you are fit to dive... you'll need to score 100% on the form OR have docters approval.

Have a look at my dive site... it is not finished yet... but it gives you more details about diving in Holland.
