Many years of unrest, poverty, not much to see regarding folklore and wildlife. That are the reasons why I haven't been there during my African voyages. I went to Sierra Leone in November 2007. It was great. There were many places to see there. The war had been over and the country was re-inventing itself. People were so lovely! There were great spots to see the chimps - I went to a reserve near Freetown. Nightlife was fantastic, and I only scratched a surface. The country opened a few national parks, all of which come highly recommended. The beaches were fantastic, too - particularly the most idyllic one - River No.2 Beach, near York.
