Good health and high spirits!

Has anyone ever crossed by bus to Libya from Tunis? If so please fill me in on the experience, cost etc.. Did you get the visa there or did you have it before hand?

I'm hopefully going to the border with a letter of invitation but no visa per se.. going to take my chances.

... if you are an "invited" guest of a company, organisation or local family in Libya or Algeria, they will arrange everything for you in advance. Contact them! RR

Hey Rudy, Good health and high spirits!

I'm aware of the invitation thing, however time is against me. I leave on the 29th January. I am working with a fellow Libyan to get the invite, I need this regardless of the visa, but we are not sure if the visa will be issued from Canada or Libya. If I get the visa here 1)it takes around 4 weeks 20 it costs $156 (which I am not going to pay!) and it requires me giving up my passport for that month. I'm travelling to either the Carribean or C. America on the 14th for a week.

I'm just wondering, if I get the letter of invitation faxed to me, than I can carry it with me to the border and get the visa then at the border.

any insight to this?

Tashi

Tashy, see http://lexicorient.com/libya/z_arrivals.htm

§ Tunisia border: Ras el-Jedir says:

"...it has been reported that some travellers have been able to obtain visa at the border. This is not common, and unless you are certain that you are the lucky one today, or you see no other way of getting a visa, you should arrange everything at a Libyan consulate well in advance. Anyhow, should you test this out, at least bring an Arabic translation of your passport. "

http://www.triotours.com/faq/ly/visa-how.htm

§ Where to apply says:

"...officially, you should not be able to get a visa for Libya outside the region of the country where you are a citizen. Recently, some travelers have reported the possibility of getting a Libyan visa in Cairo and on the Tunisian border. In both cases, you should have all your paperwork in order before applying."

Another strategy if you dont get the visa in Canada: first get a letter from the canadian consul in Tunis, then at the Lybia consul try get the visa or at least a letter supporting your wish to enter Libya for the border-post? One important tip concearning any consul or border authority - what ever happens always stay calm and polite. Any small sign of displeasement or aggression will lead to absolute ignorance and rejection.

Have you read Dani's (daniserralta) last log-book entry, he got turned away from the Sudan border. :-(

I missed an opportunity going to Saudi Arabia because I coulnt get a visa in time! :-(

There are some arab countries just togh to get into! If you cannt get in enjoy extra time in deep Tunesia, you will love it! :-) RR
