What is the best way to travel the length of Africa?

I'm planning on going south to north if that makes any difference. Also, any other advice about traveling in Africa is appreciated. cheers! Using mile-wide brush strokes it could be argued that flying from June to September or around Christmas (a ‘peak season’ that can last from November to March if you’re coming from Australasia) is going to hit your budget hardest.
