Indian Summer around Murnau, Bavaria

  17 votes
Can you believe it, 15 Degrees at the end of November? One must be crazy not to go for a short Sunday mini break to the forfronts of Munich. Murnau a lovely place 60Km south of Munich lays next to the beautiful Staffelsee.

I got up this beautiful Sunday morning way to late for such a trip to the mountains and the lake Staffelsee, but I could just not resist. At 5 hours left of sunshine I was heading towards the mountains as fast as possible. Murnau lays about 60 Km south of Munich which is about a 30 min drive on the German Autobahn. That highway gets you there pretty quick, however due to the lack of time I decided to skip the city center and head directly to the lake side.

What can I say? Definatelly the lake as I have not seen the city. Take the walk around path. That will take you to the best places near the lake. You can save the Euro for the parking if you just drive about 100 meters further. I steped into that tourist trap :-)

There is a great look out which gives you an amazing overview on the lake and the nearby mountains.

What's really great:

I loved the surface of the lake. There was no wind at all. The mountains and small boat houses placed their face like a miror on the lake. I am allways a huge fan of such mirrors.

The lakes in British Columbia are among my favourites. You can kanu there for days in such beautiful waters, but that is a different stpory (report) :-)

Sights:
The city of Garmisch - Partenkirchen

The Alpenvorland is absolutly amazing! You need to have a car, though. I took the road towards Garmisch and ended up in a nice little bavarian Café with so much great food for your soul that one will drop out there as round as an apple!

Accommodations:
What a beautiful day!

There is a fair amount of small guest houses which looked very comfortable from outside. You can get a beautiful lake view. However, I did not stay over night, so my impressions are limited on that one.

Restaurants:
A futher taking his son for a ride in the kanu.

All traditional bavarian food. I skiped that one and headed towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen which is a few K further south.

Other recommendations:
Majestic moutains. Just about 40K from sounth of Staffelsee

I continued my journey to Germanies highest Mountain, the Zugspitze. At 1000m hight all the warmth surrounding you is gone. However the majestic mountain forfront is worth a few bibbers. After getting some cheap gas in Austria - just 5Km away, I was heading back to my home in Munich. What a great day!
