Harry Potter's London

London travelogue picture
As a fan of the 'Harry Potter' series by J. K. Rowling, I was estatic when my equally obsessive friends decided we should take a trip to London and Brighton. We made the most of our four days in England, seeing the typical tourist attractions and the more magical ones. We visited between March 21 and March 24 - the weather was cool, but the city wasn't packed with Muggles as it had been when I'd visited before (in July). The three days spent in London allowed us time to see most everything we wanted, and we had a wonderful time.

Favourite spots:

The highlight of our first day was a tour of the BBC studios by a friend of a friend. The usual London sites we visited included the Tower of London and Shakespeare's Globe. As 'Potter' fans, we made our pilgrimage to King's Cross Station.

What's really great:

We had great fun at King's Cross, running carts into barriers and pretending to vanish through Platform 9 and 3/4. We also managed to run to the theater district for a drink and a chance to get actor Ian McKellan's autograph. On Sunday morning, we took a relaxing walk along the Thames - it was a beautiful, sunny day and sightseers and street performers were out to entertain us.

Accommodations:
Central Park Hotel, Kensington: the rooms were rather small, and we had a problem with flies when we arrived, but it served its purpose. The lobby and bar were nice for what we paid.

Hangouts:
The Duck and Dog: a tiny, typical pub in the theater district. We chose it because there was a table available (not so at any bar with a TV that night - there must have been a big game on). Cute, but small, and the men sitting next to us commented on our Gryffindor scarves.

Restaurants:
Zaika: delicious Indian restaurant, a bit fancier and pricier than the rest of our student-budget meals. The place was half-empty, and the ladies at the coat check were rather snooty (until we over-tipped them). The food, however, was heavenly.
