Echmiadzin - St Hripsime Church
Echmiadzin - St Hripsime Church
Echmiadzin, some 15km from the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, is the seat of the head of church in Armenia. The town is actually called the Holy See, and that appears to be its official name. The Cathedral of Echmiadzin, built in 303, two tears after Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion (the first country in the world), is truly amazing. It is not as richly decorated as some other Armenian churches around the world, but it is serious, austere and very old. There are other over 1500 years old churches in the town, some surrounded by picturesque walls, some in perfect condition, and some badly ruined. From one of them, Church of St. Hripsime, one can see both the highest mountain of Armenia, Mount Aragats and the mysterious Mount Ararat. Echmiadzin is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
