Gili Islands

michellehugo Joined: Oct 07 Points: 8 Posts: 2 Posted: 2007-10-24 08:41:00    We have an opportunity to stay at Gili Mano Bird Park in Indonesia. Has anyone been? Would it be worth our while? Also, what amenities are on the island. We would be staying in self catering. Is there market where we can buy food? What is the accommodation like? Is the island small enough so that we can rent bicycles and visit the different locations? We want 'off the beaten track', but not 'beaten off the track'. Are the other two islands easily accessible from Mano? I haven't stayed on Gili Meno but on Gili Trawangan (see my report) and it is one of my all time favourite spots off the beaten track but still civilised which sounds like what you are looking for. I presume that Meno would be similar to Trawangan meaning that you can hire bikes to ride around but it is sandy so the going can be tough. These islands are small so you tend to walk but there are also Cidimos (pony traps). There are numerous restaurants serving great seafood & international dishes and I am sure that you would be able to purchase requirements from a local shop or market stall if you preferred to cook. The accomm looks pretty upmarket at the bird park. There are small boats that connect the islands so you can go from one to the other but Gili T had everything we wanted so we didn't bother. I realised I called the place Mano right after I posted the questions. Thansk for the info. You helped me a lot. We just did not want to get stuck in one place.
