Hi there. I was just wondering if anyone knew the latest on the Tibet entry permits. I am not entirely convinced I want to purchase a tour from a Chinese travel agent just to be able to enter Tibet. I'd love to see Lhasa when I'm in China this summer, but I am not planning to stay there long but just do things independently. Anyone?

Kind regards, Krys

Hi
It is right if you mention Tibet on your Chinese application form you visa will not be granted. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!!!
In order to enter Tibet you need a Tibetan Permit which can only be otain by an official Travel Agent. Once you get your visa you will need to email it to your travel agent who can obtain the permit for you.
Once in Lhasa you don't need to stay with your tour if you don't fancy it. Once you are off the airport or the train station you can run free in Lhasa in your own time and leisure.
The cheapest way to get around the city apart from walking is to rent a bike.
It is a bit off a ripoff but this the only way...!
If you are caught in Tibet with no permit is fine is 1000$ it happened I have it myself. You could also been asked to leave the Chinese Territory as well.
So between booking a cheaptour or pay the fine...I take the tour!
