My daughter & I would like to do a short trek in India next summer that would allow us to see some old monastaries. She is an art student and would like to see, well, art. We both like to hike and/or backpack but we only have two weeks at the most. Any suggestions would be welcome!

hi,

there are monastries spread all over north india ,places like: dharamshala(where the dalai lama stays,)leh, tabo(in the state of himachal pradesh), etc.

what time of the year are you planning to come to india..? the ladakh region is open only from july onwards. but the dharamshala and other areas in himachal can be visited earlier as wll, say in the months of may-june.

Some of the treks in India are the Ladak, Himachal, Darjeeling(WestBengal) and Kashmir Valley.

There are several websites that do online booking for Treks. Some of the reliable ones are listed here. I have family/friends (mostly elders 50+) that have gone on the Amarnath and Mansarovar treks(mostly religious-Hindus), but can surely get you some reliable information about the tour/travel agents they went through.

It might be worth considering some treks in Nepal.. Everest, Kangchenjunga, Annapurna. Nepal is a great place for art too.. with beautiful monastries. A great combination for Trek & culture.

I haven't done a whole lot with trekking except in Nainital and some in Jammu and Nepal, but can surely help you with any information you might need.

Wishing you a GREAT journey!
