information about france  MurbachFrance, Alsace
This Romanesque Abbey was founded in 727 and was once one of the most politacally important Benedictine Abbeys in the area. It's territory once included 3 towns and 30 villages and Charlemagne himself took the title of "Abbot of Murbach". In 936 the Hungarians attacked and killed many monks, 7 of whom are still buried inside the church. The abbey was able to rebuild its strength but started its slow decline in the middle age, finally falling into ruin during the French Revolution. All that is left of the church is the back of it, the transept.
