A short history...the ossuary became so popular (and populated) because around 1280 the Abbot returned from Palestine with some "Holy Soil" that he spread in the cemetary. People from all over the country and central Europe came to be buried on holy ground. By the early 1500's a half-blind monk was given the task of removing most of the bodies and putting them in the chapel, making more room for more bodies in the cemetary. In the 1870's a woodcarver was employed to do something "creative" with the bodies, nearly 40,000 by this time.

This was just one of 4 bone pyramids in the ossuary.

Ignore my question on the previous photograph. So here is the story about the skull & bones. Those are some old bones, literally!
