Located in southern Utah in Zion National Park is a spectacular gorge carved by the Virgin River. It is 16 miles long (26K), up to 2000 ft deep (610m) and only 20-30 ft (6-9m) wide in some areas.
Hiking the Narrows means hiking the river...the trail is the Virgin River. At least 60% of the hike is spent wading, walking, and sometimes swimming in the water which even in summer can be cold (58F or 14C when we were there). The current is swift, the rocks underfoot are very slippery, and sudden flash floods are a real danger.
But hiking through the shadows of these towering cliffs, ever changing colors, hanging gardens and sandstone grottos is a breathtaking, unforgettable experience.
