Located on the banks of the Salzach River is Salzburg, the fourth largest city in Austria, and encased by two steep hills - Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg.
Salzburg is a very beautiful city, rich in cultures and architecture with many buildings having baroque domes or medieval spires that give the skyline an Italian flavour. The city has been described as the German Rome and can be visited all year round. From December to March is the ski season, whilst it is very cold and there is a lot of people but it is lovely to wander the streets of the old town. Much like Prague in the summer months, it can become overcrowded.
Between July and August, the Salzburg Festival is the highlight of the annual calendar. The city comes alive to the operatic, theatrical, and orchestral events. They also celebrate Mozart Week (as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here). It was also the setting for the popular Christmas film ‘The Sound of Music’ and there are many tours available.
