it´s good to be a little bit cautious but i am living in argentina right now and i haven´t felt at all unsafe since i got here. stay out of colombia. argentina is safe, and chile is the safest country here. if you go to touristy areas like macchu picchu it´s really easy to run into other people to travel with, but there are also a lot more theives in these kinds of places. don´t talk too much to cab drivers, or anyone. it´s best not to bring things that will make you stand out. do you have any specific questions i can help you with?

To follow up on the last comment - leave jewelry home, wear a cheap watch, and avoid low cut tops or extremely short shorts. Machismo abounds - no need to be rude, but be careful. The heavily traveled areas are also heavily patrolled to protect the tourist industry. The one place I did find unsafe was Lima. Even though there were two of us, we had two different encounters that were unpleasant.

Have a blast!

thanks everyone!!!

in answer to ravinderkumarsi, i am travelling for a year and a half in total...starting in OZ and NZ, heading off to South America, mainly Brasil, for about 4-5 months, and then heading off to Turkey, Egypt, and Israel, where I will work for a while.

i'm not really too worried about South America anymore (thanks for everyoe's responses, once again!), I've been doing loads of homework, but I am still curious, especially about Carnaval and if it's totally insane...especially Rio

email me reender@hotmail.com with any more advice and what nots.
