Peterborough - Canada, Ontario Peterborough is a city on the Otonabee River in central-eastern Ontario, Canada, 125 kilometres (78 mi) northeast of Toronto. Peterborough is known as the gateway to the "cottage country" of the Kawarthas, a large recreational region of the province. In the photo is the Peterborough lift lock. No external power is needed, the lift lock functions by gravity alone using a counterweight system.
