City by the Sea

  19 votes
Mahajanga is a mid sized city on the northwest coast of Madgascar. I went there in the summer of 1999 with a group from Seattle Pacific University and spent two months serving, playing, camping, hunting, etc...

Mahajanga is a great city. It is a seaside city full of Malagasy people with differing faiths and varied incomes. Madagascar is full of corruption and poverty. It has been through political strife and is severly deforested. Yet the people are still happy and welcoming.

Favourite spots:
My favorite thing to do was to go out to the airport and take a shower under the nozzle of the firestations well.

What's really great:
The people. They are so friendly. Many of them struggle to make ends meat but they will welcome you with open arms and host you like money is no burden.

Sights:

Make sure to go to a soccer game and check out the famous huge tree down town. It's a great place for shade.

Restaurants:
Enjoy the awesome pastries!

Other recommendations:
Check out the board walk in the evening. It's the place to be!
