Kragujevac - Heart of Sumadija

  10 votes
Kragujevac was first mentioned in 1476 as a village of 32 houses. In 1818, when he started the reconstruction of Serbia, Duke Milos Obrenovic appointed Kragujevac for a capital. Four years later, this town grew to 283 houses and around 2.000 inhabitants.

The military industry helped Kragujevac to become one of the most important towns in Serbia starting the period before WW I to these days. In 1953, car industry started developing here. Belgrade is Europe. If you want to see a true serbian town, go to Kragujevac... Ground floor houses, mostly wooden, with gardens in front and behind them clean streets... In the middle of it is downtown, a long and wide street or more of a square paled with white stone. Konstantin Jircek Ceh, 1874

Favourite spots:

What's really great:
Kragujevac has a special meaning for me. It is a town where my Mother grew up and place where my Grandparents live. As a kid I loved going to Ethno House. It is a remake of a traditional house in Sumadija from XIX century. Originaly it was built as a monument for Marshal Tito, but continued working as a museum long after his death...

Sights:
If you happen to be in Kragujevac during the summer, you will find it's lake as a perfect place to cool down a bit.
