Cologne - Germany, Nordrhein-Westfalen This fountain tells the story of the Heinzelmaennchen, famous in Cologne folklore. The story goes that there once was a time when Heinzelmaennchen did all the work for the people of Cologne during the night, so that they could be lazy during the day. One of their demands was, that they were never to be seen or disturbed. This went on for some time until one night a tailor's wife became too curious and spilt some dried peas on the stairs to make them trip and fall. Needless to say, the Heinzelmaennchen never came back again and from then on the citizens of Cologne had to do all the work themselves.
