Winnipeg boasts a rich history. Founded as the capital of the province of Manitoba in 1870, it grew to be a hub for all of Western Canada with the construction of the Trans-Canada railroad in the 1880s. It capitalized on this and grew to be Canada's 3rd largest city. Today it is much quieter and has been surpassed by boomtowns like Calgary and Edmonton, as well as Vancouver.
Still, there is plenty to see and do in 'Winterpeg'. The Royal Canadian Mint is located there and makes both the Canadian currency as well as currencies of over a dozen other nations around the world! The Forks is a popular shopping destination with residents and tourists alike. Built at the fork where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet, it is full of shops, fruit stands and stores, much like Granville Island in Vancouver. Lake country is only an hour away by car and offers access to some of the world's largest inland lakes. [edit text][editors]
