Santa Maria, in the southern tip of the desert island of Sal, is where the tourism industry has concentrated. The town boasts great beaches and rather good nightlife. There are obviously a few good hotels and some fabulous restaurants, most of which do evening programmes filled with Cesaria Evora type singing. Very atmospheric indeed. The town itself has very little to offer. It is just a residential place, now slowly being overtaken by well off foreigners buying holiday homes there. It is clean and well organised. The little, single and two storey houses have vividly painted facades, and people are very, very friendly. [edit text][editors]
