The Company of Jesus Church (La Compañía de Jesús's by catzy2309

Cuzco - Peru, Cusco Compania de Jesús (or just ‘La Compania’) is located at Plaza de Armas. It is a Jesuit church built in 1571 on the foundations of ‘Amarucancha’ (the Serpent Courtyard), which was the palace of Huayna Capac, the last Inca to rule an unconquered empire. The church was almost destroyed by the 1650 earthquake, but the Jesuits decided to rebuild the church and make it the most magnificent of Cusco's churches! The Archbishop of Cusco, Don Alonso Ocon, didn’t like the idea of a church - bigger and higher than his Cathedral, and he complained about the construction. The case was brought to Pope Paul III for decision and he supported the Cathedral, but La Compania was almost completed when the Pope’s words reached Cusco. It ended with an agreement that the Jesuits gave up three naves, three doors, a bell designed to rival ‘Maria Angola’, and a few other things – but it was still a very impressive church that opened in 1668.
