Capital of Chile, population 5-6 million. Incas once ruled here, the spanish arrived in 1536 and it remained a colony till 1810. The city offers a lot to travellers, somewhat differently to others in South America, latin and somehow very mediteranean, also very modern. Near the coast (makes a good daytrip to the beach), its centered in the middle of the country between the harsh climate in the north, the dryest in the world, and the alpine like climate in the east and south.
