Because of its heavy European, and especially German influence, it is considered by some the German Hong Kong. There are large sections of buildings near the ocean shore that date back to the beginning of the 20th century. The Granite Castle, for example, dates back to 1902.

But Qingdao isn’t just history. Qingdao, like much of China, is rapidly modernizing. One fine example is CCTV tower, which stands over 300m tall and overlooks most of the city. Qingdao, home of Tsingtao Beer, is also home of an international beer festival every fall. If nature is your cup of tea, head out to Laoshan, where a spring provides water for Tsingtao’s brewery, as well as having a famous temple located on it. [edit text]  [editors]
