Tianijn, located about 50 km from Beijing, is one of northern China’s largest seaports. With roughly 10 million people, it is also one of China’s megacities. It is named after a ferry used by Emperor Tainzi hundreds of years ago.
As with many coastal Chinese cities, there was a large European influence in the past 19th and 20th centuries. After invasion several times by European powers, extra-national enclaves were established and buildings were created using European design and architecture, leading to a unique mix of East and West.
