Station House Museum - Travel tip by marianne

pictureMember opinion: The last steam train rolled out of Clifden over 60 years ago. The Station House Museum is situated in the original engine shed which was built in 1895.

The ground floor is dedicated to the the Connemara pony, Irelands native pony breed. They were working horses but with the introduction of modern machonerey they were no longer needed. These days the Connemara pony is an excellent jumper and gets the best prizes in shows.

The upper gallery tells about Clifden's history, its development in the early 19th century, the Galway – Clifden railway line, a photo exhibition of the Marconi Wireless Station in nearby Derrygimla.

Life-size figures of the aviators Alcock and Brown complete the exhibition. They landed in a nearby field after their historic flight in 1919 when they crossed the Atlantic in 16 hours and 12 minutes covering 1980 miles.

Open from May-October
