Dubrovnic is one of the most impressive cities in Europe for both visual and historical appeal and it seems really sad that we have such limited information about it on this site.
Historicaly, until the times of Napoleon, Dubrovnik was one of the great maritime cities of the Med, that vied with such as Venice for influence and it deserves to be viewed as touristically equal to 'La Serenissima.'
If you aproach it for the first time on the overnight boat from Italy, it is difficult to believe that you have woken and are seeing a real place. So little has changed since the city took on its main form in the 13th century -or so it seems. In fact, considerable damage was done to some of the ancient buildings in the wars that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia but the restoration was faithful to history.
Walk round the walls and visit some of the museums and other historic buildings but leave time to enjoy boat trips and swimming. [edit text][editors]
