In June 1995 the „action-artists” Christo & Jean Claude finally accomplished an idea they tried to realize since 1971: To wrap the Reichstag, the former and future German Parliament, in 100.000 square meters of thick-strength woven polypropylene fabric with an aluminum surface, held together with 15.600 meters of blue polypropylene rope. The project met with scepticism and refusal as well as with sympathy and enthusiastic acceptance in the German public. On February 25th, 1994, at a plenary session in Bonn, the Bundestag - the parliament of Germany – voted after a passional debate in favour of the project Wrapped Reichstag. The result of the roll call vote was: 292 in favor, 223 against and 9 abstentions. Chancellor Helmut Kohl was one of the opponents of the project.
For a period of two weeks, from June 16 to June 23, 1995, the richness of the silvery fabric, shaped by the blue ropes, impressed more than 500.000 spectators.
