Out of Whale Season

There is more to Hermanus than whales. Firstly Hermanus is just one and a half hours from Cape Town and it has the sea and the mountains to offer.
Wine farms and tasting in the Hemel en Aarde valley, Blue Flag beaches and extreme activities.

A group of us visited Hermanus end February and early March 2006. The weather was fantastic for the whole week, it was between 25 - 30 degrees every day, sunny skies and loads of fun on the beaches. The Cape winelands is not the only area that has wine farms and wine tasting. Believe it or not the Hemel en Aarde valley in Hermanus has the most fantastic wines, award winners, and smaller personal wine farms, and much more accessible. It is such a beautiful valley and the views are magnificent. We went shark cage diving, what an experience, saw 7 huge great whites, such a rush, they bumped the cage. To top it all that day, when we returned back to our stunning guest house, On the Cliff Guest Lodge, which is right on the sea front, we sat on our balcony with a lovely cool glass of wine watching about 200 dolfins feed. Where can it get better than this. Day 3 we decided to take it a little easy, especially after the previous night at all the local night spots. Lazed around the pool at On the Cliff, walked along the beautiful cliff path to the New Harbour for a light fresh fish lunch - stunning - spent the afternoon on the beach, its a huge sandy beach that stretches for about 20km with life gaurds. You can take a horse ride along the beach. Day 4 - great weather for tandem paragliding, wow the views are fantastic. The village of Hermanus has a central market square where the local people sell hand made products, so many talented people and the arts and crafts are so original. Restuarants are just great, fresh fish. Hermanus is definitely worth the visit, even when the whales are not there. Will be back again and thanks to the Hosts on On the Cliff guest house for their warm hospitality and all the information on what the area has to offer.

The most beautiful spot in Hermanus is the 10 Km cliff path walk. I woke up very early one morning to take a short walk, but the sunrise was breathtakingly beautiful, I could not stop walking. The views across Walker bay to Gaansbaai were so stunning.

Our stay at On the Cliff guest house and the warm hospitality. It was the best accommodation we had on our whole trip in the Western Cape.

Our accommodation at On The Cliff guest house was stunning and warm hospitality. They are right on the sea front and the cliff path is right in front of the guest house. What was also very nice was that they were a short walk from the village and from the New Harbour. The rooms were very spacious and had large balconies facing the sea. They also have a sauna, swimming pool, secure parking and had bicycles we used to get around when we did not feel like taking the car.

There are over 56 restaurants in and around Hermanus. The food here is just great. The seafood is soooo fresh.
