St. Petersburg in Russia - The Venice of the North

St. Petersburg has the largest number of bridges of any city in the world. With a total of 539 bridges, not even Venice, Stockholm or Amsterdam can beat the city total!


Few cities can offer so many stunning attractions and moods as St. Petersburg - City of the Tsars. From the vibrant colours of spring, through the sunny days and endless twillights of the famous White Night, the brilliant golden sun of autumn, and into the crisp and brittle brightness of a St. Petersburg winter, the City casts its own unique spell over visitors. Created by Peter the Great in 1703 to be his 'window on Europe', St. Petersburg combines its fascinating Russian heritage with a distinctly European outlook.

Favourite spots:
The heart of St. Petersburg, the Palace Square, where the Winter Palace ,The General Staff Building of the Ministries and centered on the impressive, 155 foot-tall Alexander Column. The Winter Palace served as the tsarist residence, which building nowdays belongs to the State Hermitage - The largest artistic, historical and cultural museum.

What's really great:
Church on Spilled Blood was modelled after the over-photgraphed St. Basil's in Moscow's Red Square and its flamboyant Russian style by architect Parland's project. It took 24 yeasrs to built and 27 to restore. It has bogging 7000 square meters of mosaics. This important landmark was created as a memorial .

Sights:
St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of the finest architectural monuments of the XIX century. The cathedral is the fourth greatest cupola cathedral in the world. It is richly decorated with monolithic columns, paintings, mosaics, sculptures, marble end semi-precious stones. Its gilded cupola can be seen glistering from all over the city.

Accommodations:
The city is an Open-air Museum. There are more than 140 museums. The Hermitage, great art museum of the world, with no fewer than 3 million objects, it embraces everithing from Scythian goldwork to Cubism. Its exhibits the paintings of Rubens, Rembrant, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and works of many other masters, relicsof past culture of many countries of the world.

Other recommendations:
The Palace -and-Park Ensemble of Petergof (Petrodvorets) is a jewel of the Russan art, a town of parks, palaces, and fountains and often called as Baltic Versailles. In the past it used to be an exquisite summer residence of Russian tsars. Upper Garden and Lower Park are genuine masterpieces of landscape design, number over 150 fountains, 5 monumental cascades. On the teritory of reserve there are 9 working museums.
