Isla Mujeres - One of my all time favourite destinations!

Isla is a respite from all the tourist hustle and highrises across the water in Cancun. It offers crystal turquoise water and Playe Norte is a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach. It's a great place to hang out either in the water or on the sand and meet other travellers who are mainly daytrippers out from Cancun.

Favourite spots:

Playa Norte or the north beach is great, shallow water and a beautiful beach it is lined with restaurants if you need sustenance. For a change Playa Paraiso at the other end of the island offers a pace a little more hectic as well as some great restaurants serving the local speciality Tikixic, fresh fish grilled with a special sour sauce washed down with a couple of bottles of the local cerveza.

What's really great:

The island has a really slow relaxing pace and it has it's own special magic. There are no cars or motorbikes, only a few golf buggies but the island is small enough to walk around. I really loved it here.

Accommodations:

Casa Maya tucked around from Playa Norte on it's own little secluded beach is a little gem.
Number 17 was our favourite, king size bed, beautifully decorated, thatched roof, hammocks (one for each of course), airconditioned plus a communal kitchen which we really appreciated after travelling for some months.

Restaurants:

Chen Hauye is very casual authentic Mexican food cooked and served most days by mamma and pappa. Meals include flautas, empanadas, burritos and so on. Two locations.
Zazil Ha is one of the most upmarket and beautiful eateries on the island. You eat while the swinging fans cool you.
The menu is international with a Mexican twist for eg Lobster tamales. It is not the cheapest place to eat but the value is there.

Other recommendations:

Pay a visit to the Turtle farm while you are here not only is it interesting the entrance fee helps to conserve them so you are helping a worthwhile cause also.
