Travel guide to Dakhla Oasis

Medieval town of Al Qasr

Daklha Oasis is one of the few Egyptian Oases that is actually above sea level. It is fed by over 500 springs and stretches a vast area over 200 square kilometers. Al-Qasr, a well maintained Islamic medieval village with its wonderful ethnographic museum, is the most well known site. Its narrow streets are sized for mule carts - walking in them takes you back in time. The remote pharonic Temple of Deir El-Hagar, surrounded on all four sides by the Western Desert, is well worth a visit. Built during Roman times, it contains cartouches of Nero amongst other Emperors.
Mut, the largest settlement in Dakhla Oasis, still retains an old section with remains of the original citadel that garrisoned Greek and, later, Roman soldiers. It's more modern section is a cluster of concrete buildings that provides hotels and restaurants for tourists on their way to more remote areas. [edit text] [editors]
