Dahab travel tips

Full Moon Cafe
This traditional Bedouin camp includes a wonderful restaurant featuring sandwiches, pizza and more traditional Bedouin dishes. An large covered open air cafe with low Bedouin walls, stacked with rugs and pillows, allows you to relax sitting on the floor while drinking marvelous fresh juices and smoothies. A popular dive site, we relax and ate lunch between dives. more

Om Kolthum Cafe Shop
Streetside cafe sitting right on Masbat in the south "locals" side of town, this is a very traditional bastion of testosterone. Named after a famous Egyptian singer, music videos play in the background while ongoing games of Backgammon, Dominoes and Chess take place amongst the perfume of Shisha pipes and mint tea. I was the only woman in the place but as a westerner, little attention was paid as I watched my son, age 14, play dominoes with all comers. There is no charge for the games which are brought to the table on trays, as long as you order drinks. more

King of Chicken
This low key sidewalk cafe offers fabulous meals at a minimal cost. for $3.60 USD we had shish kabob, pita with three sauces: Tahini, Dim’a Musabika and Baba Ghanoush, vegetables in a tomato sauce, soup and a cucumber and tomato salad. To top it off, their fruit juices ($1 USD) are fantastic! for $4 USD you can order 1/2 chicken with the above! more

Desert Divers
I learnt to dive with this club in January 2005, and returned in May 2005 to finally do my divemaster. They were very professional and so friendly. Made me very welcome, and showed me all the best spots to dive in the Red Sea :-) more

Climbing Sinai Mountain (2285 metres)
This is an unique experience. The top of the Mount Sinai, or Gebel Musa, is where God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses after the Hebrews escaped from Egypt. You can get there by direct buses from Cairo, from Sharm al-Sheikh, or from the nearest and easiest place, the lovely Dahab (which in Arabic means gold). Usually the trek starts from the valley, in the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Catherine, founded in the III century and extended by the Emperor Justinian I during the VI century. The best is to start the afternoon and sleep there to watch the sunrise. There is a chapel, almost always locked, with a patio to expand your sleeping bag. The view from there is awe-inspiring! You have two ways to walk up, the stairs and the path. It is advisable to start by the path and descend by the stairs. Once down the Greek monks will give you hospitality and fresh water from the well. You can sleep in its dormitory for a few piasters. Otherwise there are 3 stars hotels near. more

Yum yum
If you're going to Dahab, be sure to try Yum yum restaurant on the beach of El Masbat (the 'center' of town). Nice atmosphere, great food! Fresh fish, shrimps, lobster... Mmmm. I loved Dahab, will definitely be back next year! more
