This quaint town, or should I say city, is on the gorgeous Savannah River. It started as a prison for English convicts, but it sure did turn around! It pulls you in, even if it's too hot!

Savannah, the Hostess City, has a revolutionary and haunted past. It was the first English city in Georgia, so it does have a European flare to it. You can walk to anywhere in the city and you won't be out of breath is you stop at the squares that dot the city. You can take little side trips to Tybee Island or go north, across the modern bridge to South Carolina. You can go to the cemeteries, The Colonial and Bonaventure. Bonaventure isn't a place to miss. You can take a leisurely stroll along Bay Street, or go on a carriage tour, like my tip. The old buildings make you feel like you've gone back in time, yet it still is contemporary in its own way.

Bonaventure Cemetery is a must. Walking through it seems very eerie. The spanish moss and to the effect. You can't possibly see the whole thing in one day. Tybee Island is a place you can't miss. You can saunter along the beach or watch the fishermen on the pier.

The squares are the most amazing. Even though they are little parks in one big city. You can sit in the shade of a live oak, the state tree, or just look at the statues. The most haunted square I think is Johnson Square. There is no sapnish moss in the trees. When it's hot in Savannah, Johnson Square always has a breeze bowling through it. Legend has it that Nathaniel Greene came to Savannah and hated it. It's too hot or the spanish moss was everywhere. When he died and was buried in the square, he makes the breeze blow through and kills the spanish moss. Scary!

You need to see the historical houses. The Juliette Gordon Low House. St. John the Baptist Church. You can see the storefronts along Bay Street. North of the city, there's a modern looking bridge. That bridge goes over the Savannah River and into South Carolina. You don't want to go outside the city though. Savannah is surrounded by slumps. If you go to Tybee Island or to Bonaventure Cemetery, you have to go outside Savannah.

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Bay Street. They have bad service and chaos galore. They take your car for valet parking, but you don't know where it is. There aren't enough people to work that place. The upsides are that the carriage tour stops here, and the rooms are nice. The hotel is close to most things here. You can eat brunch and watch boats go by.

There's Huey's on Bay Street. They serve authentic New Orleans-style food. It's the next-best thing to being in New Orleans. They even have free begniets for the kids. Definitely look in all the candy shops. They sometimes give out samples. No wonder Savannah is called the Hostess City, and it's known for its "southern hospitality".

This might be odd to you at first, but there is reason to my madness. Check out the other hotels. You don't have to stay there to get free things. You can get free food. You can even get free bathroom breaks. Just sitting in the lobby can get you those free little bottles of water.
