Hatshepsut's Temple was once filled with references to herself. She took power from her stepson and declared herself Pharaoh - the first female Pharaoh. Although she is depicted as a man, often complete with the beard of wisdom, female traits remain. These statues line the tall colonnades of her Temple - the other references such as bas reliefs and cartouches, were scratched out when her stepson came to power. You see the original relief with scars where her form would have been.
