information about guatemala  El Mirador Basin PreserveGuatemala, Petén
One of the saddest things we encountered throughout the El Mirador Basin on our 6 day hike was Looter's Holes. Looters continue to dig into ruins in hopes of finding a burial cache. Unfortunately, the striped burial sites leave little for archeologists to analyze. Vigilantes (Guards) live at all the larger sites on the trails, but there will be four or five of them to cover an area of several square miles.
