Clean, efficient, and altogether the best night train service I've ever experienced! We traveled 2nd class, air-conditioned sleeper for the 14 hour trek from Chiang Mai back to Bangkok for under $25 US. The seats are in pairs facing each other, providing lots of leg room. A luggage rack/ladder is at every set of seats. At around 8:30pm the porter converts the seats to sleepers and hangs drapes, making them comfortably private. Book a lower berth when possible as they are darker and the air conditioning isn't blowing right on you, but the berths are roomy, clean and well linened, the food, at $6 US for a four course meal, was excellent (although the morning coffee you can pass on), and the ride was smooth. Book an express which has fewer stops. We left Chiang Mai at 4:30pm and arrived in Bangkok at 7am - PERFECT!
