Mandalay - Burma, Mandalay Visiting the open air vendors near Mandalay's Zei Gyo market was quite interesting, much more so than the indoor Zei Gyo dry goods market; be sure to arrive around 7:30 am or so when the market is most active. As the picture shows, the market is a bit on the shabby side, but that only serves to add to the market's charm. The mix of the sights (which may include some members of Burma's ethnic people in tradition costume), aromas (at times, an earthy cocktail of ripe produce, dried fish and fermented shrimp paste and bamboo) and the din of the vendors shouting out the prices of their assorted items for sale coupled with the sometimes animated stall-side negotiations makes for a most memorable experience. The market is generally not on the itinerary of the various tour packages, which likely schedule your morning hotel meal before the bus trip to the next destination during the best time to see the outdoor market.
