Travel guide to Asmara

Asmara's main cathedral

Asmara, Eritrea's capital, boasts perhaps the largest number of colonial buildings anywhere in Africa. The architecture is inspired by 1920s Italy and the modernist and art-deco styles dominate. The city is exceptionally attractive and organised. Asmara surprises on every corner. Its pavement cafes and patisseries serving perfect cappuccinos and tea cakes are unheard of in Africa. Marvelous Catholic, Christian Orthodox and Muslim temples standing one by one is not a common sight elsewhere. The city is well prepared for tourism, although the authorities might not necessarily be. Travel permits are required for trips outside the capital. There is a good number of decent hotels, some of which are excellent value and restaurants invariably serve delicious pastas, pizzas and Eastern African dishes. Nightlife is also very civilised, in contrast with the neighbouring states. [edit text] [editors]
