I will be travelling to Munich with my wife in May next year for up to 2 weeks, we would like to stay somewhere near to Munich to use as a base to explore without driving but using buses/trains etc. We are on a limited budget and both in our sixties so youth hostels are out, just somewhere clean and comfortable with access to local transport would be ideal, room only or b&b would be fine, we would apreciate any advice or guidance as this will be our first visit and do not want to use tour companies except for the odd excursion, I would be grateful for any advice from members, Regards, Tony.(jacko1)

Hi Tony,

I am not a 'Bavarian Insider', but I might have an idea for you:

If I understand you right, you think about staying somewhere out of Munich to save some money and to have a base to explore the area.

Rosenheim is situated not far away from Munich, direction south-east and has a railway station. It's a nice little town and not far away from the mountains, the Chiemsee and a lot of other beautiful places.

Have a look at: http://www.kuko.de/main.asp?main=tourist&c1=&c2=sigthseeing

I never stood there myself (always in the surrounding area), therefore I am not able to give you a conrete advice to find a room. But I am sure the tourist office would do their best to help you ( touristinfo@rosenheim.de )

I am curious about where you'll be landing at last!

Good luck, Christian

Thanks for the advice Christian, we will look at that site, we think we may have found a self catering cottage on by a lake near Mittelberg which has access to a bus route and is about 35-40 mins from Munich. We also have other options but some thing like this seems ideal, we are also going to look at Augsberg and Essenheim, we have plenty of time to decide but the more information and tips we can get the better it will be, we have been thinking of going for some years but this time we will definitely make it, Regards, Tony.

If you're thinking of booking a skiing holiday, apartments in Germany are available virtually on the doorstep of the superb slopes of the Arber Mountain ski resorts in Bavaria - accommodation for holiday rental in a destination of such versatility that as many people choose the summer months to visit as those seeking winter skiing. Holiday accommodation in Bavaria exists in a location steeped in romance and mystery, where fairy-tale castles nestle amongst the densely forested, snow-capped mountains, and charming rural village communities still adopt traditional customs and a way of life that is typically Bavarian.
