I have booked flight, insurance and accommodation for 4 nights in Madrid in late September/early October.
Whereas I can and do read guidebooks and know some things I want to do, I always like recommendations based on personal experience on lesser known sights and good, reasonably priced eating places.

Not so long ago it was no problem to arrive in Madrid and find budget accommodation on the spot but times have changed. Today Madrid is a popular year round destination so it's essential to book ahead so as to avoid hours of wandering around the city's hostels hoping there's a room somewhere in the heat of the day. The Hostal Victoria I y II, are on the 2nd floor of the same building on c/Carretas, just 3 mins. from the corner with Puerta del Sol. Hostel Plaza Dort is well situated in the city centre.
