The biggest folkfest on the globe, Munich's Oktoberfest is held for two weeks end of September (better weather) and generally ending on the first weekend in Oktober. About a half of visitors travel here from all far corners of the globe, half are german nationals and less than a quarter are from Munich.

Future Dates:

2007: September 22 - October 7

2008: September 20 - October 5

2009: September 19 - October 4

2010: September 18 - October 3

2011: September 17 - October 3

The world's biggest party! Construction of the beer halls has already begun for the 2007 Oktoberfest running 22nd September till 7th of October. I see that booking accommodation is already a problem and prices have soared. A tip: take a hotel or Hostel just outside Munich with a good train connection. They have more rooms available and at cheaper rates. Other cities within an hour from Munich are: Augsburg, Dachau, Landshut, Rosenheim and beautiful Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Nürnberg, Passau and Salzburg are under 2 hours away. A lot of towns along the "S-Bahn" network have guest houses or rooms to rent ("Zimmer frei"): www.mvv-muenchen.de/web4archiv/objects/download/3/schnellbahnnetz_2007.pdf

A rail day pass costs €19p.p. or €27 for a whole group of up to 5 people, includes also the busses, trams and underground rail in Munich, Augsburg or Nürnberg:
