About a half of visitors travel here from all far corners of the globe, half are german nationals and less than a quarter are from Munich. Some trivia: 30% of the year's production of beer by Munich breweries is consumed in the two weeks of Oktoberfest. 12,000 People are employed at the Oktoberfest. Of these, 1600 are waitresses. There is available seating for 100,000 people. The six Oktoberfest breweries, (Spaten, Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu) sold 6 million mugs of beer in 2005 (5.5 million in 2004). Construction of the beer halls has already begun for the 2007 Oktoberfest running 22nd September till 7th of October. I see that booking accommodation is already a problem and prices have soared. A tip: take a hotel or Hostel just outside Munich with a good train connection. They have more rooms available and at cheaper rates. Other cities within an hour from Munich are: Augsburg, Dachau, Landshut, Rosenheim and beautiful Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Nürnberg, Passau and Salzburg are under 2 hours away.
