Hello All.

I'm going to Scotland for 10 days trip in september.

Can anyone give some advices about car rent and B&B?

Is 10 days enough to see all great places in Scotland?

If not, which part (west or east) I should visit this time?

Best regards and thanks.

Me and my husband spent our holiday in Scotland. This country is amazing and we enjoyed our stay so much! We've been there for a week. We could visited Isle of Skye with a boat trip to visit the seals, Arbroath, St. Andrews, Roslin and Edinburgh. We've stayed in Perth. It's a really lovely small town. We've travelled by a renting car. I think it'll be enough 10 days and I advise stay in the Highland for 1-2 night because it's beautiful! Now I'm sorry that we couldn't.

The Scottish people are the greatest who I ever met!

Enjoy your stay!

Thank You for reply.

What kind of car have You travell? It is important to take strong or 4WD car in the highlans?

What about B&B? It is easy to find free room? I don't want to make reservations because I don't know in which town I will be sleeping.

Best regards.

Scottish summer (sic!) does not require a 4x4 vehicle and roads in the country, including highlands are not challenging. A regular car with a good 1.6 engine is sufficient. Reputable companies like AVIS and Hertz are best and they offer comprehensive insurance, which is essential. Booked in advance online (AVIS is good in this respect) sometimes offer favourable rates. easyrentacar.com can sometimes be good, too if booked in advance but I am not sure about their service, being no frills car rental company, etc.

10 days in Scotland is not very long if you want to do some hiking in the mountains and visit some of the islands. Isle of Skye is a must, and you should not miss it. It is also great for hiking (not challenging at all) and has some grand views. Edinburgh and Striling are best for history and culture. Glasgow is good for nightlife, but not very impressive for architecture, but can be interesting to professional architects - there are some historical elaborate facades, industrial and simple buildings, large and square communal mass housing, and a few new modern 21st century structures.

Highlands are probably the most rewarding for outdoors with Loch Ness and Loch Lomond being wonderful and mysterious lakes (oops, sorry - lochs) with an odd castle here and there. Aberdeen is a typical oil-rig dispatch centre town and feels more rough than pretty, but when it rains the grey buildings look almost silver! Inverness is very small and total uninspiring. There are a few interesting villages and towns in the Grampians, some with excellent hiking trails. The farther north you go, the more time you will need and less English people will speak (on Skye it is almost polite to ask if people speak English first - you will hear a lot of Gealic) and friendlier they are.

B&B can be tricky. Depending on the time you go. It is always recommended to call first. Even on a day. If you arrive too late during the hours of darkness, the places may claim they have no rooms regardless of the occupancy. Some hotels, like Travelodge are actually very good value and not more expensive than a B&B. It think B&B can be about £25-£30 per person and a double room at a small hotel may be about £45-£55. It is worth checking out websites, noting some prices and telephone numbers and then call in on a day to make a booking.

Getting food on Sundays and Saturday afternoons can be challenging as many places (few and far between in Scotland) close down. Many supermarkets, newsagents like WH Smith and the chemist Boots do almost edible sandwitches if you are desperate. Hot food in pubs is usually fantastic in Scotland but the kitchens are not open all day, and in the evenings they might close at about 7pm.

Happy travelling!

Wow, thank You Krys for comprehensive reply.

Now I can say I know what I need to know.

I'm considering Hertz and Sixt for car rental.

Kindest regards.

Our car was from Europcar. It was a Skoda Fabia 1.2 and it was perfect for all trip! It cost 172 GBP with insurances. We loved it so much! :)

You have pay for the parking mostly 8.00-18.00. But there are amny multi storey car parking also.

Our accomodation has been really nice! Not B&B but a self catering apt in the city center of Perth. We prefer the apts and find more comfortable. If you're interested I can give you their web address. It costs 295 GBP for a week and was very nice.

Thaks a lot.

I will keep it in my mind. However and I think I'm not going to spend more than two nights in one town this time.

I'm thinking about Ford Focus with automatic transmission from SIXT for ca GBP300/10days .... if I have check properly on www.sixt.com.
