Perhaps this would be a good time to recognise Somaliland, which worked so hard to maintain peace on its territory, whilst Somalia prefers anarchy and war...

The list is endless: Bavaria, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Catelonia, Mindoro, Quebec, Cascadia, Texas, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Madiera, Kalaalit Nunaat, Kurdistan, Nagorno Karabakh, Gaza, Tamil, Orange Free State, Order of Malta, St. helena, Hout Bay....

There are more than 100 independence movements around the globe. I think always of those that are weak to strive for independence like the aborigines, Inuits, and American Indians. Even in the civil world, departments and workers want independence from their tyrant bosses and bureaucracy too.

I would like to have seen Kosovo split, half to Albania and half to Serbia but as travellers we should report but not choose political sides, have little influence anyway? :- (

Hi Rudi, I realise it might have sounded political, and that wasn't my intention. I am just so happy for the Kosovars, and was so impressed with the effort to maintain peace in Somaliland that I could not contain my feelings. In some instances, for us travellers the politics make it harder to visit certain peoples due to tensions in the regions like Tibet, Western Sahara, etc. Although I guess that in a few places a moral question could be raised, I am not taking a political side. Interestingly, GLOBO 'recognises' 262 countries, whilst officially there are about 194... ;)

... I am pleased you mentioned Tibet.

There are 192 members of the United Nations. Two major independent countries are not members, The Holy See (Vatican) and Taiwan making 194.

GLOBO lists 262, that includes separate entries for islands and dependencies like Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Bermuda, Tibet, Cayman Isands, Gibralta..... The list is similar to the 254 of http://www.listsofbests.com/list/4427

I like the list of the "Travelers Century Club" http://www.listsofbests.com/list/657 which lists 315 very distinct regions. That difference are possibly all the states and provinces that would like to get independent!
