A concert trip to Poland

  10 votes
I am a member of the Royal Male Voices Choir Rotte's Mannenkoor of Rotterdam (NL) (See http://www.rottesmannenkoor.nl) Since we celebrated our 150th anniversary this year, we decided to go on a trip to one of the twin cities of Rotterdam, Gdansk in Poland.

Apart from the beautiful concerts we had in the city and her vicinities, we also enjoyed the city as such. Poland is really picking up in the race for the tourist's affection. I remember the grey situation of about 15 years ago, but nowadays the city is filled with fine terraces and good restaurants. The old and beautiful buildings are being restored into their old grace, and it looks in no way like the old communist city it once was. That is, if you stay in the centre...

Favourite spots:
Dlugi Targ
Dlugi Targ
The best place to be in Gdansk is beyond any doubt the Dlugi Targ, or long market street. This street has all the beautiful buildings, terraces and much is going on here.

What's really great:
St. John's church
St. John's church
We had a hotel in the suburbs of Gdansk, near the city of Sopot. It was only 200 m from the sea. We had a great time in some bars at the sea side!
Or just sit down and have a beer at the old harbour at the end of Dlugi Targ.
The old St. John's church is beautiful. It was damaged in the war, and nothing much has been done since. This gives the interior a dramatic expression.

Sights:
Visit Westerplatte, but be careful. Some years ago I came there by car, but left by taxi... Still, in general, it is a good idea to park your car in a guarded car park. Westerplatte is the place where Germans invaded Poland.
Another impressive place is the former concentration camp of Stutthof in Sztutowo, about 50 kms east of Gdansk. Or the teutonic knights castle of Malbork.

Accommodations:
Hotel Posejdon is not in the centre, but taxi's are not expensive. Great hotel and good restaurant.
