Whether Torshavn can be regarded as possibly the world's smallest capital city depends on the extent to which the Færoe Islands can be regarded as a country. Since they come formally under Denmark, possibly any such claim might fall but this and several other travel sites treat the Færoes as separate from Denmark, unlike Denmark they are not in the EU and they enjoy membership of the West Nordic Council and a very comprehensive free trade agreement with Iceland. 'On the edge of nationhood' might seem fair.
Torshavn is a sort of rural city. It doesn't appear very special on the approach from either land or sea but, on arrival at the port, the old area of Tinganes can be seen, where government offices share the are with residences, all with turf roofs.
The Færpes Art Gallery and the national and outdoor museums are all worth seeing as is the Nordic House, built at the expense of the Nordic Council, of which the Færoes are an Associate Member seeking Full Member status. [edit text][editors]
